There are two ways to create a user defined code in a dataset.
Prerequisite:
- Must have already setup database with user-defined coding enabled (See Create a Database for more information.)
Create a "user-defined" or "candidate" code to code one item at a time:
- Select the Code a Dataset option from the Coding panel.
- Select the dataset to be coded.
- One item at a time will display with the available coding options listed on the right-hand panel. Select one code (or more, if applicable/permitted) by pressing the corresponding key as shown in the panel.
- Select one of two options:
- OPTION 1: Type a word directly in the field in the right-hand panel and select the Code button when complete.
- OPTION 2: Type multiple words directly in the field separated by a "pipe" |. (On many keyboards it is the backslash with a shift held down.) Select the Code (or Recode, if applicable) button when complete.
NOTE: Although a code can be applied to an item via a click of the mouse on the applicable code(s), using a keystroke instead of a mouse to code is a faster, more efficient method.
To create a "user-defined" or "candidate" code to code multiple items from the list view:
- Select a dataset from the Documents panel. Select from the following choices:
- OPTION 1:
- The units will appear in list view on the Search and Browse Dataset page. Follow the steps to Code in the List View
- When in the Coding page, type a word directly in the field and select the Code button when complete.
- OPTION 2:
- Follow the steps to Code in the List View and
- From the Coding page, type multiple words directly in the field separated by a "pipe" |. (On many keyboards it is the backslash with a shift held down.) Select the Code (or Recode, if applicable) button when complete.
