Create a dataset

Follow

A dataset is a group of items that is ready to be coded. You can create a dataset from an archive or bucket and then set the coding options.

Tip: When you create a dataset, you can also create a hierarchical code set for it. Plan out the code hierarchy before you create it in DiscoverText.

  1. Open the archive or bucket.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • In the Archive Options section, click Create Dataset from Archive.
    • In the Bucket Options section, click Create dataset from bucket.
  3. In the New dataset name dialog, type the name, and then click OK.
  4. Optional: Select the Sample dataset check box.
  5. Select or create a code set.
    • To create a code set, select Create new. After you click Create Dataset, you are prompted to create the code set.
    • To use an existing code set, select Select existing, and then select a code set from the list.
  6. Optional: Set the advanced coding options.
    • To require coders to verify each code, select the Turn on a verification step for coders check box.
    • To allow users to add codes, select the Allow user-defined codes check box.
    • To allow users to select multiple codes for an item, select the Allow users to select more than one code check box.
    • To use a hierarchical code set, select the Use hierarchical code set check box.

Note: If you select this option, the Allow user-defined codes check box is disabled.

  7. Set the coding type.
    Option Description
Standard coding Each coder codes each item in the dataset.
Assign users a range of items to code Each coder codes only the assigned range of items.
Automatically load the next uncoded items for users to code Each coder codes the next uncoded item.
  8. Click Create Dataset.
  9. Optional: If you chose to create a code set, add codes to the new code set.
    Option Steps
To add codes to a single-level code set
    1. In the Code field, type the name of the code.
    2. Optional: Add a description of the code.
    3. Optional: Assign a keyboard shortcut.
    4. Optional: Assign a color.
    5. Click Add code.
    6. To add another code, repeat steps a to e.
    7. Optional: In the Enter name for new code set field, type the code set name.
    8. Click Finished.
To add codes to a hierarchical code set
    1. In the Code field, type the name of the code.
    2. Optional: Add a description of the code.
    3. Optional: Assign a keyboard shortcut.
    4. Optional: Assign a color.
    5. Click Add code.
    6. Optional: To allow coders to assign this code, select the Selectable check box.
    7. Click Add.
    8. To add another code, click the Add code button, and then click one of the following:
      • Add code after: Adds a code at the same level.
      • Add child code: Adds a code one level below.

A couple of explaining "4. Optional: Select the Sample dataset check box." would be nice.

Also, there's an unexplained option "Classifier Type" in the Add/Edit Dataset Codes screen - a word on that or a link to an article on editing dataset codes would be handy.
